Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Wednesday 6th May 2009
A new screening service which is intended to reduce the number of people who experience sudden deaths due to cardiac problems has been launched.
Backed by the Cardiac Risk in the Young (Cry), the screening will take place across England and is to begin in Durham.
Doctors and nurses are to tour in a mobile trailer and will examine people aged 14 to 35.
Commenting on the motivation for the project, Steve Cox from Cry said: "We expect to find that one in 300 people we scan will have a serious problem. They can then change their lifestyles to dramatically reduce the risk of dying young."
The testing is to get underway this weekend and a launch will be attended by 12 families who have lost children and young adults to sudden death syndrome and sudden cardiac death.
Sudden cardiac death is an umbrella terms which is used to refer to many different causes of cardiac arrest in young people.
