Grape extract 'could help improve heart health'

An extract from grapes could help to improve heart health, it has been found.
In news which may be of particular interest to cardiologists, researchers from the University of Michigan have suggested that antioxidants called phytochemicals, which are found in the fruit, could help prevent heart failure in people who have suffered from high blood pressure for a number of years.
According to the scientists, these antioxidants could be responsible for activating a protective process in the heart that reduces heart muscle damage.
The research, which was conducted on rats, was presented at the 2009 Experimental Biology convention in New Orleans.
E Mitchell Seymour, who led the research as part of his doctoral work in nutrition science at Michigan State University, said: "There are the small changes that diet can bring, but the effect of grape intake on genes can have a greater impact on disease down the road."
Recently, a team from the University of Bristol suggested that routine blood transfusions given after cardiac procedures may not be necessary and may in fact cause medical problems, the Times reported.
