Stem cell research into MS shows promise

Biomedical scientists have been making progress in their research concerning the use of stem cells in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS).
Three patients in the US who were all treated using cells from their own adipose tissue showed improvements in their conditions.
One of the individuals involved suffered painful seizures for three years prior to undergoing the treatment.
After the trial, he reported that these had ceased and that he had seen improvements in his cognition and a reduction of spasticity in his arms and legs.
Dr Boris Minev, a researcher from the Division of Neurosurgery at University of California San Diego, said: "While obviously no conclusions in terms of therapeutic efficacy can be drawn from these reports, this first clinical use of fat stem cells for treatment of MS supports further investigations into this very simple and easily-implementable treatment methodology."
The most common neurological condition among young adults in Britain, MS affects the central nervous system.
