New hygiene measures to be implemented in Scottish hospitals

In a bid to reduce the number of cases of superbugs contracted by patients, hospitals in Scotland are to hire more cleaners.
An additional £5.4 million a year will be supplied to health boards to recruit a total of 600 more cleaning staff.
The new workers will be permanent NHS employees and will not be subcontracted via private firms.
Funding will be split in differing amounts between the country's health boards, with NHS Greater Glasgow to receive £1.2 million.
Addressing delegates at the Scottish National Party's spring conference, health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "This investment is good for the NHS and good for patients. It will improve even further the standards of hygiene and cleanliness in our hospitals."
She added that it will also lead to the creation of jobs, which is particularly important given the current economic climate.
Following a recent visit from the Healthcare Commission, NHS Western Cheshire's chief executive Helen Bellairs stated that hygiene is the "highest priority" for Ellesmere Port Hospital, the Ellesmere Port Pioneer reported.
