Biomedical scientists have developed a stem cell therapy to cure a common type of blindness.
According to a report in the Times, surgeons predict that the treatment will be made generally available in six or seven years' time.
The method, which was developed by researchers at the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London and Moorfields eye hospital, involves replacing a layer of degenerated cells with new ones which have been created from embryonic stem cells.
It will be used to help people with age-related macular degeneration, which is a painless condition that causes people to lose their central vision and occurs when the part of the eye involved is unable to function as well as it had previously.
Commenting on the development, chief executive of the Macular Disease Society Tom Bremridge said: "We are extremely pleased that the big guns have become involved, because, once this treatment is validated, it will be made available to a huge volume of patients."
