Stem cells used to reverse course of type 1 diabetes

Researchers have been investigating the use of stem cells to reverse the course of type 1 diabetes.
A team of biomedical scientists from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and Northwestern University in Chicago followed up a study conducted in 2007 which showed success in treating the condition in 15 sufferers with their own stem cells.
In their latest research, they followed this up by examining the effects of stem cell treatment on a further eight patients.
They confirmed that, in the majority of them, the stem cell transplant led to an appreciable repopulation of functioning insulin-producing beta cells located in the pancreas.
Co-author of the report Dr Richard Burt said: "I wouldn't use the word cure. But it appears we changed the natural history of the disease," Time magazine reports.
Recently, a team of biomedical scientists announced that they are making progress on a new drug to treat Alzheimer's which involves clearing the brain of a damaging protein linked to the disease.
