Biomedical scientists are making progress on a new drug to treat Alzheimer's.
The drug, which was shown to clear the brain of a damaging protein linked to the disease, has passed its first clinical test.
Known as CPHPC, the chemical removed a protein called serum amyloid P (Sap) component from the brains of five Alzheimer's patients.
The patients, who were aged between 53 and 67, had mild to moderate Alzheimer's and all the Sap from their brains was cleared within three months.
Leader of the University College London study Mark Pepys said: "There is a severe need for treatment for Alzheimer's and there is nothing available that works well."
He went on to describe the approach as a "pretty good, safe option" and said that, while no guarantees can be made that it will work, it is a "good shot".
The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer's is a progressive condition and there is currently no cure, although there are treatments available which can slow its development.
