Hospital patients 'dying from malnutrition'

More than 240 patients in English hospitals die each year from malnutrition, new figures suggest.
In news which may be of particular interest to dieticians, data revealed to the Conservative party showed that 242 lives were lost under such circumstances in 2007.
Meanwhile, an additional 140,000 people were discharged from hospital suffering from malnutrition during the 12-month period, which is a rise on the 130,000 who entered medical centres with the condition.
Shadow health minister Stephen O'Brien said: "There can be no excuse, the least that patients should be able to expect is to be fed properly when they go into hospital for treatment."
However, frontline staff are spread too thin and are overburdened by paperwork, he added.
Such professionals must be released to perform the role that they are there to do, Mr O'Brien concluded.
Last month, Alison Smith, a senior dietician at the British Dietetic Association, stated that some hospital patients cannot always eat the food they are given without help - which they do not always get.
