New medical research centre to be created

In news which may be of particular interest to people seeking biomedical science jobs, a new medical research centre is to be created in Scotland.
The centre will bridge the gap between scientific research being conducted at the Beatson Institute and clinical treatment carried out at the Beatson West of Scotland Oncology Centre, the Glasgow Evening Times reports.
It will be called the Beatson Translational Research Centre and will be staffed by some of the world's most acclaimed scientists.
Dr Karin Oien, a pathologist specialising in gastro-intestinal and liver disease, said: "By looking at tissue samples from patients with cancer, we can speed up the processes involved in cancer research - finding new drugs, for example, or better methods of diagnosis, or prevention."
The Beatson Translational Research Centre is being developed by University of Glasgow, the Beatson Institute and Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board.
Cancer Research UK, which supports studies into cancer through the work of more than 4,500 scientists, doctors and nurses, is also involved.
