Programme launched to cut MRSA in Southampton hospitals

A screening programme has been launched in order to reduce the risk of patients at two Southampton hospitals contracting MRSA.
Prior to admission to Princess Anne Hospital and Southampton General Hospital, adult patients will now undergo testing for the superbug.
People found to be carrying MRSA - which causes infections that are difficult to treat due to the antibiotic resistance of the bacteria - will have treatment to reduce or remove it.
In addition, inpatients will be supplied with special liquid soap to use for the first five days of their stay in the medical centres.
Commenting on the measures, Tracey Cooper, consultant nurse for infection prevention at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "The trust is committed to doing all we can to reduce the risk of infection and the additional measures we have put into place will help to protect patients from infection with MRSA."
The policy is another development in the organisation's ongoing efforts to cut infection rates, she added.
