Refer an Audiologist
Friday 3rd April 2009
A new development in research concerning deafness has been announced.
In news which may be of particular interest to audiologists, a team of scientists from the University of Sheffield have shown the potential to someday restore hearing loss in people who suffer from permanent deafness.
The researchers, who published their findings in the Stem Cell Journal, say they are able to manipulate foetal stem cells to grow sensory hair cells or auditory neurons.
They claim to have obtained promising results by inserting the cells into animals.
However, the team admits that they are many years away from engaging in human trials.
The study's authors write: "Although considerable information has been obtained about the embryology of the ear using animal models, the lack of a human system has impaired the validation of such information."
In other industry news, audiologists at the Royal Berkshire Hospital were recently offering patients special in-the-ear hearing aids at reduced prices, the Reading Evening Post reported.
