Work begins on carbon neutral medical centre expansion

Work on the redevelopment of the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London has begun.
The Mittal Children's Medical Centre is named in honour of Aditya and Megha Mittal, who donated £15 million towards the project, which will include the construction of a new cardiac unit.
Set to cost a total of £321 million, the glass buildings are expected to be the most environmentally friendly hospital facilities in the UK.
Work is scheduled to be completed in 2016 and the finished building will feature natural ventilation, a green roof and combined heating, cooling and power units.
Dr Jane Collins, chief executive of the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust, said: "Inconvenient, cramped and outdated wards with little space to accommodate modern equipment will be replaced with new facilities where parents can sleep alongside their child in comfort."
Describing itself as the first UK institution to offer inpatient care to children only, Great Ormond Street Hospital treats more than 22,000 inpatients and 77,000 outpatients a year.
