Demand for phlebotomy services increases in UK hospital

The demand for phlebotomy services at a hospital in England has risen over recent weeks, an expert has said.
Jackie Powell, department manager for haematology and blood transfusion services for Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust, admitted that demand for blood testing at Harwich Hospital has gone up recently, the Harwich and Manningtree Standard reports.
She stated: "Demand for the phlebotomy service at the hospital does fluctuate but for most of the time it can be serviced adequately by a single phlebotomist."
However, the hospital does try to send an additional phlebotomist from Colchester General Hospital when demand levels rise, she added.
Ms Powell went on to say that she is working with senior managers to attempt to find a solution and, in the meantime, the medical centre is also trying to find locum cover.
As well as Colchester General Hospital and Harwich Hospital, the Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust runs Essex county hospital and Clacton and District Hospital.
