Register as an Dietitian
Monday 23rd March 2009
Diabetes can be effectively managed if it is diagnosed at an early stage, a medical expert has claimed.
Commenting on the issue, Sara Spiers, care manager and dietician for charity Diabetes UK, said that the condition can be kept under control when such early detection occurs, the Guardian Series reports.
Indeed there is no reason why diabetes patients cannot live the same lives as non-sufferers, she said.
Ms Spiers added: "People can live with diabetes for around ten years before realising they have it, but the danger with that is there can be very serious complications, such as kidney disease, heart disease, stroke and impaired vision."
She made her comments in the wake of figures which suggested that 12,760 people suffer from the condition in Redbridge.
A long-term chronic condition caused by too much sugar in the blood, diabetes affects around 2.3 million people in the UK and there are thought to be at least half a million more sufferers who remain undiagnosed, according to NHS figures.
