MRSA infection rates 'fell in England last year'

The number of people being infected with hospital superbug MRSA in the UK is continuing to fall, new figures indicate.
According to statistics produced by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), there were a total of 725 cases in England between July and September last year.
This represented a decrease of 13 per cent compared to the previous quarter.
In addition, the figure was 33 per cent lower than the same period in 2007, when the number of cases was reported to be 1,082.
A spokesperson for the HPA said: "This continued reduction in cases of MRSA is testament to the huge efforts being made across the NHS to tackle the problem of healthcare-associated infections, which remain a big challenge throughout the world."
However, she added that health authorities cannot be complacent.
Established in 2003, the HPA is an independent organisation which exists to protect the public from threats to their health from infectious diseases and environmental hazards.
