Fatigue 'has prognostic implications in patients with heart failure'

Scientists have claimed that a syndrome which causes older patients to experience fatigue is associated with heart failure.
According to a team working at Columbia University Medical Centre, anergia affects nearly 40 per cent of older adults with heart failure.
Whether the condition is a result of heart failure or a potential contributory factor is not yet known.
However, the researchers say that the findings do indicate that fatigue in geriatric patients with heart failure needs to be effectively evaluated for a number of reasons.
For example, the treatment of fatigue has the potential to influence the prognosis of patients with heart failure, people with cardiac jobs may wish to note.
"The overall goal of our current research efforts is to develop methods to evaluate and assess the causal or contributing factors of anergia in order to develop interventions to decrease morbidity and mortality due to this syndrome," stated Dr Mathew Maurer, associate professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University Medical Centre.
Recently, Renate Schnabel from the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany and Emelia Benjamin from Boston University School of Medicine announced they have developed a new risk score that could help doctors identify people at risk of atrial fibrillation.
