The expansion of screening programmes for superbug MRSA has been welcomed.
Whiston and St Helens Hospitals' MRSA screening programme means that, since Monday March 9th, every patient undergoing surgery has been screened for the infection, the St Helens Reporter attests.
The screening involves a simple and painless swab being taken from the noses or throats of patients.
Responding to the programme, Ann Marr, chief executive of the St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "The extended screening programme is just one of our wide range of infection control measures to provide a safe, clean environment for our patients."
She added that the trust, which provides services to people in a range of places - including St Helens, Knowsley and parts of Halton and Liverpool - is "totally committed" to maintaining the highest levels of hygiene.
Ms Marr went on to say that the trust has met all of the requirements of the Healthcare Commission's Hygiene Code.
