A new training technique developed by experts from the University of Hull and Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust may lead to an improvement in cancer treatment, it has been claimed.
Professor Andy Beavis, Professor Roger Phillips and James Ward have developed a virtual environment for radiotherapy training (VERT).
The system, which is being produced by Vertual, is said to be cutting training costs and helping to improve cancer survival rates, bjhcim reports.
Students who take part in the training use 3D glasses and are able to walk around a virtual training room using computer-generated equipment and a hand-held pendant to simulate surgery.
This removes the need for training to be conducted in radiography treatment suites.
Professor Beavis, an honorary professor at the University of Hull, said: "The Department of Health backed the project and recognised its cost savings and efficiency and I'm also proud that we changed national policy on the training of radiographers."
Founded in 1927, the University of Hull now has more than 18,000 students.
