Audiologists to dispense hearing aids at reduced prices

Hearing aids are to be dispensed by audiologists at reduced prices, it has emerged.
Medical experts at the Royal Berkshire Hospital (RBH) will be offering the In-The-Ear (ITE) aids, which are discreet devices which tuck into the ear, for between £1,500 and £6,000.
This is around half their normal cost, the Reading Evening Post reports.
According to the publication, the audiology department arranged a deal in order to get the devices at a reduced price.
Commenting on the initiative, Dr Andy Phillips, head of audiology at the RBH, said: "The NHS hearing aids are the best in the world but they are all behind the ear.
"What patients are more keen on, for cosmetic reasons, is a hearing aid which is less visible and for reasons of cost, the NHS can't provide this."
However, at the RBH, medical experts are keen on providing access to devices that are considered to be more desirable, he added.
Recently, Alison Free, brand manager of Audiclean, said that ear syringing is costing the NHS more than £11 million each year.
