A team of researchers in the US claim to have made a discovery concerning factors that affect cardiac health.
Scientists at Columbia University Medical Centre and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found that there was a correlation between depressive symptoms and cardiac events in women.
Published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the study revealed that relatively healthy women with severe depression are at an increased risk of cardiac events, such as fatal coronary heart disease and sudden cardiac death
For example, female patients with clinical depression were said to be more than twice as likely to experience sudden cardiac death.
Research leader William Wang said: "It's important for women with depression to be aware of the possible association between depression and heart disease, and [to] work with their health care providers to manage their risk for coronary heart disease."
Recently, Renate Schnabel from the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany and Emelia Benjamin from Boston University School of Medicine created a risk score to help medics identify people in danger of an abnormal heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation.
