Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 12th March 2009
In news which may be of particular relevance to dieticians, an expert has claimed that the UK is probably not experiencing a rise in food allergies.
Paediatric allergist Dr Adam Fox said that there has been a rise in allergic conditions such as asthma and eczema when compared with 20 or 30 years ago.
He added: "Everybody assumes that there must [also] be a lot more food allergy around - it's in the papers all the time. I think there is a lot more awareness about food allergies, maybe not necessarily much more of it around."
Dr Fox went on to state that many allergies go away as you get older."
According to the Annabel Karmel website, up to eight per cent of children have food allergies and such conditions are twice as likely if there is a history of allergy in the family.
In addition, babies and young children are more at risk of such reactions than adults, especially when their immune systems are immature.
