A hospital has been struck by an outbreak of Norovirus, it has emerged.
According to a BBC report, the Frome Community Hospital in Somerset was closed last week to inpatients as a result of the infection.
No admissions or transfers were being allowed. However, all outpatient appointments were running as normal.
Figures cited by the BBC suggest that more than three million people in the UK contracted the illness in 2007.
Although people generally recover from it within two to three days, it is highly contagious and causes vomiting and diarrhoea.
Earlier this year, West Middlesex Hospital was affected by an outbreak of Norovirus, despite having put in place strict hygiene measures in order to prevent such an occurrence, the Hounslow Chronicle reported.
According to consultant microbiologist Stella Barnass, the measures adopted by the facility included strict hand washing, the use of gloves and aprons among medics when attending to patients and thorough daily cleaning.
