Ear syringing costs NHS £11m a year, audiologist says

Ear syringing is costly for the NHS, according to comments made by an expert.
Alison Free, brand manager of Audiclean, said that patients having such treatment mount up bills for the health service in excess of £11 million each year.
She pointed out that, while earwax has a number of positive functions, it can sometimes block their ear canal and lead to pain or temporary hearing loss.
Meanwhile, audiologist Catherine Brown said: "Keeping your ears clear and clean is important.
"If I need to send someone to see their nurse or GP because of wax build up, it can delay the fitting of a hearing aid by around two weeks - which isn't good news for anyone."
Recently, Rita Vara, a hearing aid audiologist for a Specsavers store in Reading, said that, while people are generally willing to arrange eye tests, they can be reluctant to put themselves in for hearing tests.
