Refer an Audiologist
Wednesday 18th February 2009
Recently, a volunteer participated in an experiment to experience what it is like to have a hearing impairment, audiologists may be interested to discover.
Stephanie Campbell had her ears blocked using soft foam plugs so that she only had limited hearing, the Coventry Telegraph reports.
The 23-year-old from Stratford said that she was feeling withdrawn by the end of the day as a result of the problems she had experienced.
According to Toby Sutton, an audiologist at Specsavers in Coventry, the kind of hearing loss that Ms Campbell experienced is common.
He said: "Typically this is the sort of loss we come across when people come to us. Everything seems deadened and clarity is affected more than volume. It means people can hear but it is muffled and indistinct."
Recently, Rita Vara, a hearing aid audiologist for a Specsavers store in Reading, said that people are often unwilling to go for hearing tests even if they are experiencing difficulties.
