The Wellcome Trust has revealed that it is to provide a company with £1.6 million to further research into materials designed to help knee injuries.
Orthox is developing a range of orthopaedic products for the repair of cartilage.
The technology is based on the science behind spiders' silk, which is both strong and lightweight.
According to the Wellcome Trust, its award will be used specifically for the development of products to help repair knee cartilage.
Head of business development at the organisation Dr Richard Seabrook said: "Largely thanks to medical advances in recent decades, people are living longer, more active lives."
However, coupled with increasing obesity, this means knee injuries are now a considerable issue for health services across the world, he added.
An independent charity, the Wellcome Trust funds research to improve both human and animal health.
It was established in 1936 and has an endowment of around £13 billion.
