Soft toys blamed for hospital hygiene risks

The presence of soft toys in the children's ward of hospital has been identified as a risk to hygiene.
In November last year, the Healthcare Commission made an unannounced visit to the Queen Victoria Hospital, the East Grinstead Courier and Advisor reports.
Its inspectors praised the general cleanliness but criticised management systems for infection prevention and control, saying they failed to provide a fully clean environment for healthcare.
In a report, the commission said: "The use of soft toys is contrary to the trust's policy and there was no evidence of an effective decontamination plan."
Caroline Becher, director of infection prevention and control at the hospital, said that children are still permitted to take their own soft toys in, but added that there are no longer any such toys for shared use.
Built in the 1930s, the Queen Victoria Hospital provides a range of treatments and services, including reconstructive and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics and corneo-plastic surgery.
