Concerns have been expressed by a medical body concerning new powers which are to be bestowed on pharmacists.
Under government plans, which are intended as a means of improving patient care and ensuring that chemists give the correct advice, pharmacists are to be able to view patients' records.
Commenting on the potential development, Dr Laurence Buckman of the British Medical Association (BMA) said that there may be problems concerning confidentiality, the Daily Mail reports.
The expert went on to state: "We have concerns about a situation where pharmacists have limited space and are viewing sensitive information about patients on a terminal in a busy shop."
He added that pharmacists may not be able to control who is reading or altering records.
A company registered in England and Wales, the BMA promotes the medical and allied sciences and its policies are decided by elected members.
In addition, it aims to promote the achievement of high quality healthcare.
