Medical practitioners involved in radiography should refrain from the routine imaging of patients with lower back pain unless they observe serious underlying conditions, a report has said.
According to the paper, which was published in the Lancet, the use of radiography, MRI, or CT scans in patients with no indication of underlying problems does not improve clinical outcomes.
The researchers, who conducted a meta-analysis of controlled trials, found that there is no significant difference in outcomes when patients undergo immediate imaging and when they are provided with usual clinical care.
They stated: "Educational interventions could be effective for reducing the proportion of patients with low-back pain who believe that routine imaging should be done."
Recently, a new lab which can be used by radiographers was opened in North Tyneside General Hospital, local publication the Evening Chronicle reported.
The facility features a range of equipment which can be used to test patients at risk of a range of life-threatening conditions.
