Wednesday 11th February 2009
The right sort of diet can help protect people against age-related dementia, a new study has found.
Conducted by scientists at the Columbia University Medical Centre in New York, the research discovered that things such as fish, olive oil and a bit of alcohol can reduce the likelihood that people will develop the condition, dieticians may be interested to note.
This type of Mediterranean diet may improve cholesterol and blood sugar levels, thus reducing inflammation, experts have said.
It was also found that diets rich in fruit, vegetables and cereals and which contain less meat and dairy products are good for the brain.
Reporting their findings in the journal Archives of Neurology, the research team said: "Among behavioural traits, diet may play an important role in the cause and prevention of Alzheimer's disease."
Recently, the Greater Mersey Food Standards Group advised people to check the salt content of ready meals, saying that levels of the substance vary significantly between different supermarket meals, the Liverpool Echo reports.
