Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 5th February 2009
A dietician has issued a warning about rising levels of childhood obesity in the UK.
Rachel Barton, a specialist dietician with the Leicestershire Dietetics and Nutrition Service, said that children as young as two and three are receiving assistance by medical professionals because they are overweight.
She added that the number of youngsters aged four and five who have weight problems is "very worrying", the Leicester Mercury reports.
Ms Barton went on to say: "Dietary habits formed in childhood tend to stay on into adulthood and this is what we are trying to change."
Specialist dieticians in the area are now stepping up programmes to try to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity.
They are operating in children's centres and SureStart schemes - a government initiative which aims to achieve better outcomes for children, parents and communities - to help youngsters lose excess weight.
In addition, a healthy school dinners campaign is underway.
