The election of new US president Barack Obama may give rise to a boost in UK biomedical sciences, it has been claimed.
During his inaugural speech, the politician said that he was to raise the profile of science in his country.
Some of Britain's top scientists believe that his support for the funding of stem cell research will bolster interest and investment in the techniques in Britain.
According to Dr Charles Pasternak, director of the Oxford International Biomedical Centre (OIBC), Mr Obama's speech was "significant".
He said: "Now that US government funding has been restored to embryonic stem cell research, we will no doubt see great scientific advancement, which could not be timelier than in the 200th year of Charles Darwin's birth."
The OIBC is to hold a conference next month to call for substantial private and public funding.
Mr Obama made his inaugural speech on January 20th in front of a crowd gathered on Capitol Hill in Washington.
