Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 29th January 2009
A new initiative has been launched to assist overweight and obese children living in Wales.
The scheme, which is costing £1.4 million, will target around 2,000 youngsters aged between seven and 13, dieticians may be interested to note.
According to the Welsh Assembly, which is funding the project, it is the first time that something of this nature has been rolled out on a national level in any country.
Families involved in the scheme will participate in a free ten-week course combining practicing healthy eating and exercise.
Rather than focusing on weight loss, the programme will use interactive learning approaches to teach children, parents and carers weight management skills.
In January last year, the UK government announced a new strategy to combat childhood obesity across England.
Costing £372 million, the initiative was intended to support the creation of a healthier society and was to focus on a range of issues, including food, sports and transport.
