Wednesday 28th January 2009
A new range of eco-friendly measures which were announced by the NHS yesterday (January 27th) will include changes to the types of food prepared for hospital meals.
Locally-sourced produce from nearby farms is expected to be incorporated into the new meals and hospitals will also be encouraged to opt for sustainably-caught fish, instead of flying meat in from countries such as New Zealand and Argentina.
According to Dr David Pencheon of the NHS Sustainable Development Unit, the menus will keep the dietary needs of patients at the top of the agenda.
"The strategy calls for more use of seasonal food, more local food and more use of sustainable and nutritionally valuable produce such as fish," he explained.
"Doing this will of course reduce the reliance on meat and other products but will not remove them from the menu."
The Sustainable Development Unit, which is based in Cambridge, was established in April last year and has a total of seven members.
