Monday 26th January 2009
Scientists at Purdue and Stanford universities have developed stretchable electrodes which, they say, can be used to study how cardiac muscle cells react to mechanical stresses caused by heart attacks and other diseases.
The researchers have already grown mice cardiac muscle cells on the platform.
Babak Ziaie, a Purdue associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, said: "We demonstrated that the platform is biocompatible with human aortic muscle cells and mice heart cells.
"The cells adhered well to the polymer surface during mechanical strain and survived near and on the electrodes after two days of incubation."
Meanwhile, people with cardiac jobs at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro recently celebrated the opening of a newly-refurbished lab.
Costing £800,000, the revamp saw the installation of a range of new hi-tech equipment - including an X-ray device which gives higher quality images and lower radiation doses - This is the Westcountry reported.
