Refer an Audiologist
Friday 23rd January 2009
An audiologist has been credited with potentially saving the life of a pensioner from the Wirral.
Michael Boalch went into his local Specsavers store to collect his glasses and take advantage of a special offer for free hearing screening, the Wirral Globe reports.
The 71-year-old was subsequently told to book an appointment with his doctor immediately.
Hearing aid audiologist Lee Dean had found an unusual growth within his ear canal after first noticing that the pensioner's hearing was substantially worse in his left ear than his right.
The medical expert said: "We often find that people's hearing can be better in one ear than the other but it was clear when I examined Michael that something was wrong."
After being referred by his GP to an ear, nose and throat specialist, Mr Boalch was told that he had a rare condition called a cholesteotoma.
A collection of skin cells, a cholesteotoma can cause hearing loss and dizziness and, left untreated, it can destroy the little bones in sufferers' ears and even lead to brain damage.
