Refer an Audiologist
Thursday 15th January 2009
A UK-based audiologist has issued a health warning to golfers.
Crystal Rolfe, an audiologist for the charity RNID, said that people who play the sport using the new generation of thin-faced titanium drivers should consider using ear plugs.
He made his comments in the wake of recent research which found that the hi-tech clubs create a louder noise than their traditional alternatives, the BBC reports.
The study, which involved measuring the decibels produced by a range of clubs, was initiated after a keen golfer visited Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital complaining of unexplained tinnitus and reduced hearing in his right ear.
Mr Rolfe said: "Exposure to loud impulse sounds over time can cause damage. It is a short, sharp burst of very loud peak sound with this type of golf club."
He added that more research needs to be conducted into the area.
With roots tracing back nearly 100 years, RNID is a charity which campaigns on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing people.
