Scottish govt to monitor hospital infection rates

In a bid to cut down on infection rates, the Scottish government is to begin regularly monitoring rates of MRSA and C difficile in hospitals, it has emerged.
According to reports in the BBC, the administration is to issue so-called "infection report cards".
Under the scheme, hospitals will be required to publish levels of MRSA and C difficile every two months.
Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "For the first time health boards will have to report infection rates on a hospital-by-hospital basis.
"What the public can do is ensure the health board in their local area is taking the right steps to bring infection rates down."
She added that although infection rates among patients remains a key concern, progress in the area is being made.
In other news, the Healthcare Commission recently issued Homerton Hospital with an urgent notice to improve its hygiene standards following an investigation of the centre which was conducted in November.
