Biomedical scientists have reported a development in the field of stem cell generation.
A team of researchers from Imperial College London, who published their findings in the journal Cell Stem Cell, said they had come up with a way of tricking the body into releasing 100 times as many stem cells as usual.
The study examined the effects of a combination of drugs on mice and the experts behind it claim that the technique could be used to speed up the healing of heart or bone damage.
Rather than having to rely on injecting stem extra stem cells from donors or embryos, doctors may be able to use the drug treatment to make patients produce the cells themselves.
Senior researcher Dr Sara Rankin said: "We hope that by releasing extra stem cells, as we were able to do in mice in our study, we could potentially call up extra numbers of whichever stem cells the body needs, in order to boost its ability to mend itself and accelerate the repair process."
Recently, a team of biomedical scientists operating in the US revealed that they had created artificial bone marrow that can continuously make red and white blood cells.
