NHS Employers has released new guidance for primary care trusts (PCTs) to develop a new Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) as a means of supporting and extending pharmaceutical services.
The organisation, which represents trusts in England on workforce issues and helps employers to ensure that the NHS is considered a desirable working environment, said that raising the quality of PNAs should help drive industry standards up, the Pharma Times reports.
According to NHS Employers, while all PCTs in England had been advised in 2004-05 to develop a PNA, the ones that currently exist vary in quality and scope.
It said: "Raising the quality of PNAs should help drive higher standards of pharmaceutical service and improve medicines usage for the benefit of all."
The guidance is aimed at directors of commissioning and pharmacy leads in PCTs, but NHS Employers says it will also be of interest to UK providers of pharmaceutical services.
