Phlebotomists taking samples in supermarket

A supermarket in the West Midlands currently has phlebotomists taking blood samples from shoppers, it has emerged.
According to a BBC report, the West Bromwich Asda store has teamed up with Birmingham City Hospital to offer patients the option of having tests performed at the retail outlet.
The pilot scheme, which began in September last year, will run until April and enables any patient within a defined catchment area who has a referral letter from their GP to choose whether to have a sample taken in the Asda or in hospital.
Conducted by qualified phlebotomists in an area away from the where food is sold, the tests are sent to hospitals to be analysed.
Rob Ashley, pathology manager at Sandwell Hospital - which has roots tracing back to 1884 - said the service is convenient for local people.
He added: "Rather than going all the way to the hospital, where they have to pay to park and wait with all the other patients, they can get it done at local sites - like Asda."
