Hospitals stretched by big freeze

Two hospitals in Shropshire were overstretched recently as a result of the current cold weather, it has emerged.
According to reports in the Shropshire Star, the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal Hospitals - which are both run by the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust - were running at full capacity yesterday (January 6th) and were sending some patients to nursing homes in order to free up beds.
In addition, ambulances were said to have been inundated with calls from people who had suffered injuries in trips and falls as a result of the cold conditions.
A spokesman for Shropshire's four NHS trusts said: "The NHS is having to make some decisions which we appreciate may be disruptive and inconvenient for some patients - such as transferring patients to nursing homes if they no longer need the full facilities of the acute hospitals."
He added that these decisions are only taken after careful consideration.
