Medical facility in Blackpool to be upgraded

Podiatry, speech and language and cardiac services are among those which could be affected by proposals to upgrade a UK medical centre.
Under recently-submitted plans, Blackpool Victoria Hospital - which is run by Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - would see the creation of a new £40 million surgical unit, the Blackpool Gazette reports.
The new unit would be based on the site of existing annex wards and would see the services which are based in the annex move to other sites.
A total of 61 inpatient beds are set to be included in the new surgical centre, along with seven new theatres and three day-case theatres.
The plans will be considered by the local authority this month.
Commenting on the proposals, Barry McEwan, director of estates and facilities at the hospital, said: "This major development will ensure the best possible surgical care is available to Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre patients. It's an exciting time for the NHS."
