Biomedical scientists operating in the US have revealed a development in the field of blood cells.
Researchers at the University of Michigan have created artificial bone marrow that can continuously make red and white cells.
It is hoped that the breakthrough could lead to simpler pharmaceutical drug testing, the provision of a continuous supply of blood for transfusions and to the closer study of immune system defects.
The marrow has not been created for implantation into body but rather it is designed to function in a test tube.
Principal investigator Nicholas Kotov said: "The scaffold for this work had to be designed from scratch closely mimicking real bone marrow because there are no suitable commercially products."
In other industry news, the Times recently reported that biomedical scientists have isolated so-called master cells in rats which will enable scientists to seed them with embryos with tissue which lacks important DNA in order to breed animals which develop conditions similar to some found in humans.
