Biomedical scientists recently announced a development in the search for treatments for genetic diseases.
According to a report in the Times, researchers have isolated the most versatile types of stem cells from rat embryos which can be used as a tool for knocking out genes in such animals and in so doing generate models of human diseases.
The so-called master cells will enable scientists to seed rat embryos with tissue which lacks important DNA in order to breed animals which develop conditions similar to diabetes, cystic fibrosis and human cancers.
Similar techniques have been used in mice since 1989. However, rats have more biological similarities with humans than mice.
In other industry news, Barbara Follett, the minister for the east of England, recently visited staff at the Babraham Research Campus and Babraham Bioscience Technologies after the centre was granted £300,000 by the East of England Development Agency to revamp its Technology Development Lab.
