Government to improve pathology services

NHS pathology services are to be made more efficient and responsive following the publication of a two-year review into the sector, the government has announced.
In news that may interest those seeking jobs as anatomical pathologists, the Independent Review of NHS Pathology Services by Lord Carter of Coles has suggested that IT connectivity in pathology departments is improved, as well as quicker adoption of new technology.
Furthermore, Lord Carter called for the centralisation of non-urgent and specialist work, the development of new pathology networks and the improvement of test turnaround times.
Department of Health Pathology Clinical Lead Dr Ian Barnes stated that he was "grateful" for the report's findings.
"The review has found much good work already underway. Pathology is a vital service for patients and plays a key role in around 70 per cent of decisions on diagnosis and treatment," he remarked.
Last month, students visited the Countess of Chester Hospital as part of National Pathology Week in order to consider a career in the profession, the Evening Leader reports.
