Communication skills 'essential to learning'

Communications skills have been described as the "bedrock" of learning by I CAN, a children's communication charity.
In news which may interest those seeking speech and language jobs, Virginia Beardshaw, chief executive for I CAN, described language and communication as "critical" for children.
"Communication skills are not soft skills they are bedrock skills. All children's learning, relationships, all rest on communication skills," she said.
Children unable to communicate effectively will struggle to access the curriculum, Ms Beardshaw added.
Recently, a report into communication problems among young children was published and has led the government to announce an additional £12 million of funding to tackle the issue - something that has been welcomed by Ms Beardshaw.
Entitled Better Communication: An Action Plan to Improve Services for Children and Young People with Speech, Language and Communication Needs, the report followed a review of the sector by John Bercow.
