Register as an Dietitian
Tuesday 23rd December 2008
Oliver Twist's famous line about wanting more gruel may have been unwarranted, as new research has revealed that the diet of workhouse boys in the Dickensian era was adequate.
In news that may interest those seeking jobs as dieticians, researchers Sue Thornton and colleagues have published a study in the Christmas edition of the British Medical Journal that suggests youngsters consigned to workhouses in the 1830s would have had a sufficient diet.
Records studied by the scientists revealed that large quantities of mutton and beef were delivered to these institutions and a less refined, coarse bread was eaten by workhouse boys.
The authors of the research concluded that "the diet was not as bad or harmful as that related by Dickens".
Meanwhile, recent research from Tufts University in the US has suggested people embarking on a low-carbohydrate diet could find that their memory function is impaired.
