Hospital doctors say flu virus has arrived early

Hospital doctors in Sheffield have reported that the flu virus has hit the city earlier than usual this year, a local newspaper has reported.
The Sheffield Telegraph said that health chiefs estimate there are currently some 1,000 cases of flu in the region, with some 55 pupils at two primary schools off ill in one day.
A further six people in a ward at Northern General Hospital are suffering from the virus and experts are claiming that the number of people with flu is normal for this time of year - although it seems to have arrived earlier than usual.
"We are seeing true cases of flu," said Dr Rosy McNaught, a consultant in control of communicable diseases. She added that people with flu should remain at home, as the condition is highly contagious.
Nursingtimes.net recently reported that the Health Protection Agency has recommended that workers in the healthcare sector who have direct contact with patients should receive a flu vaccination, as should anyone over the age of 65.
