In news which may be of particular interest to people seeking a job as a radiographer, a new breast screening service has been launched in the north-east.
Spire Washington Hospital in Tyneside has begun using a digital infrared scanner, which is designed to pick up so-called "hot spots" that may signal the onset of cancer, local paper the Evening Chronicle reports.
Commenting on the new offering, David Browell, consultant surgeon for BreastHealth UK in Washington Hospital, said: "It is very exciting to be the first BreastHealthUK clinic to open outside of Cambridge and to offer the unique Digital Infrared BreastScan."
Normally, breast screening involves using mammography. However, this is sometimes not sensitive enough for younger women with dense breast tissue.
Spire Washington Hospital is run by Spire Healthcare, a private medical centre provider based in the UK which offers a range of services, from routine investigations and diagnostic procedures to complex surgeries.
