Panic attacks 'lead to greater risk of heart disease'

Cardiac physiologists may be interested in the findings of recent research which linked panic attacks to an increased risk of heart disease.
According to a study published in the European Heart Journal, heart attacks - or myocardial infarctions (MIs) - are a third more likely to occur among people under the age of 50 who have panic disorders.
It was also found that there is a higher incidence of subsequent coronary heart disease (CHD) in people of all ages who are diagnosed with panic problems, although this was discovered to be more marked among patients under the age of 50.
Research leader Dr Kate Walters, a senior lecturer in primary care at University College London, said: "Our findings have significant implications for clinicians. Panic attacks were associated with a significant increased risk of a subsequent diagnosis of CHD and acute MI in those aged younger than 50."
In other news, a new online training package is to be released to help train clinicians in emergency cardiac care.
Developed by consultant cardiologist Professor Kevin Channer, the course is aimed at reinforcing the skills people with cardiac jobs need to carry out and interpret electrocardiograms.
